Grounds. The whole scene shows the beautiful way in which the city of Washington is laid out. Its winding streets, fine buildings, and luxuriant shade trees make it a wonderful place. The two objects that the visitor can see from any part of the city of Washington are the dome of the Capitol and the top of the Washington Monument. The Monument is a tower of white marble built in honor of our first president. It is a shaft 555 feet tall with a base 55 feet square, tapering to a pointed top. The city of Washington is located in the District of Columbia. President Washington chose the site. A French army engineer and Thomas Jefferson made the plans of the city. Congress took up its residence in the District of Columbia in the year 1800.
