The city of Moscow is near the center of European Russia. It is the tenth largest city in the world, and is about the size of Philadelphia. It is the chief railroad center of Russia. The city has cotton, wool, and silk mills, and metal and candle factories. It also has some fine tanneries. But the chief interest of Moscow is not in its factories. It is in its historical buildings. The Kremlin is really a three-cornered walled city inside Moscow. The walls are 40 feet high and contain 80 acres of ground. They have five gates, and the streets of Moscow run out from these like the spokes of a wheel. Inside these walls are gathered the wonders of Moscow. Here are some of the finest cathedrals in Russia, and here, too, are palaces of the Czars. The Cathedral of Assumption is the holt place of the great country. and other precious stones. On the walls are paintings set in frames of jewels. It is in this cathedral that the Czars used to live in the palaces of the Kremlin, before Petrograd became the capital of Russia. One of these palaces was rebuilt in 1847. The Great Palace, built in 1806, is now used to house a collection of old robes and armor. The Imperial Treasury holds the wealth of the Czars. Millions of dollars' worth of jewels and gold are kept here. In the Tower of Ivan there are great bells. One of these weighs 64 tons. At the foot of the tower sits the largest bell in the world. It is called the Czar Kolokol. It was east in 1737, and weighs about 200 tons. It once hung in Ivan's tower, but it fell during a fire. It has a great piece broken out of its side.
