Card Front:

Here is the famous river Avon, at Stratford. It is a small stream that flows slowly through the beautiful fields. It has no high banks in the middle of England. The grass of the meadows reaches down almost to the water's edge. The scene here is one of peace. Even the cows are chewing their cuds leisurely. Were this scene to be repoduced as a work of art, it could well be called "Contentment." But as in most parts of England, here too History makes herself felt. Stratford and Avon are both dear to the lover of literature. Down the strea, to the left of the view a little, is the church in which Shakespeare lies buried. Beyond the large building less than a mile is his birthplace. The large structure itself was built to his memory. It is Shakespeare's Memorial Building. It was built in 1879 by the people of Stratford.

Card Back:

It is made of red brick and stone, and stands out sharply against the green of the trees and the fields. It consists of a theater, a gallery of paintings that have to do with Shakespeare, and a library of Shakespearean books. Each year in April plays of Shakespeare are fiven in the theater, in memory of the bard. Other plays are also given from time to time. In the gallery are some of the rare portraits of the poet. The books in the library are unusual volumes and fine editions of Shakespeare's works. In the grounds near by is the Shakespeare Monument. On its top the figure of the poet is carved in a sitting position. About its foot are four figures from his works--Lady Macbeth, Prince Hal, Falstaff, and Hamlet, representing Tragedy, History, Comedy, and Philosophy.
