San Francisco is the largest city on the Pacific coast of the Americas. It has a population (1910) of 426,912. It is situated on beautiful San Francisco Bay, and has one of the most picturesque harbors of any city in the world. It is claimed that Rio de Janeiro, Constantinople, Melbourne, and San Francisco are the four most beautiful natural harbors in the world. You have heard of the Golden Gate, the entrance that leads from the bay into the Pacific Ocean. The bay itself is 65 miles long and some 8 miles wide. The view here shows one of the chief streets of the city. You can look directly up the streets of the city. You can look directly up the street between the peaks of the range of mountains lying back of the city. Market Street runs from these Twin Peaks down to the bay. tlement here. A mission was built and finally a branch of the Hudson Bay Company established a trading post. In 1848 came the great gold rush to California. The city sprang up in a night. Within four years, it had a population of 50,000. In 1906 the memorable earthquake, followed by a heavy fire, almost destroyed the city. Buildings have been rebuilt until now a new San Francisco stands on the ruins of the older one. In 1915 the Pan American Exposition was held at San Francisco stood 11th in rank among the cities of the United States in the number of its manufacturing establishments. Among these are printing and publishing, slaughtering, foundry and machine-shops, coffee and spice mills. Its total foreign trade in 1911 amounted to over $16,000,000,000.
